A few days ago, the Bitcoin Interest (BCI) fork successfully switched to the new ProgPow mining algorithm, becoming the first cryptocurrency to use this mining algorithm. ProgPow is a proof-of-work algorithm designed to reduce the mining efficiency gap with ASIC devices. The new mining algorithm will be useful for almost all types of hardware: GPU, CPU and ASIC.

The goal of ProgPow is to match the requirements of the algorithm to the requirements of current graphics processors, so if ASIC miners are developed for the new algorithm, their developers will have few opportunities to increase performance compared to traditional GPUs. All this means that, most likely, ASIC devices will not be developed under ProgPow, due to the inability to get much better performance when using ASIC chips. This basically means that ProgPow should theoretically be really resistant to ASIC.

The ProgPow algorithm was developed for optimal performance when working with modern GPU models and tested on 6 popular video card models. The average performance results of video cards using the ProgPow algorithm are given below. Since this algorithm almost on 100% uses the capabilities of modern GPUs, the results reflect the relative performance of graphics processors, which is similar to other gaming or graphics applications.
